After the President of the United States, Donald Trump, imposed tariffs on Mexico, local congress deputies expressed their support for President Claudia Sheinbaum and called for national unity. Local deputy from Morena, Andrea Tovar Saavedra, expressed her concern about this unilateral decision, highlighting that Mexico was already working on the issues raised.
Andrea Tovar called for unity in the strategy that Claudia Sheinbaum will implement and stressed that there are still many points of negotiation on the table, especially concerning the sale of Mexican fruits and vegetables. She emphasized that starting a trade war is not advisable, as it would harm the economy of both countries.
In another approach, local deputy from PAN, Antonio Zapata Guerrero, pointed out that the tariff issue affects Canada, the United States, and Mexico, mainly harming citizens by increasing the cost of products and services. Zapata highlighted that the USMCA aimed to strengthen the economic zone and improve quality of life, so it is crucial to avoid a recession that would damage all three countries.
Antonio Zapata emphasized the importance of calling for unity and improving productive processes, reducing dependency on foreign countries, and increasing competitiveness in the international market. He also advocated for a Mexican strategy based on rational decisions and a political-economic approach that addresses the causes of the conflict. He acknowledged the work done in security and the fight against drug trafficking, hoping for a different response from the neighboring country.
