UAG Suspends Seven Programs Due to Low Enrollment

The Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAG) has made the decision to temporarily suspend seven undergraduate programs due to low student enrollment, while three programs have already been reformed. The suspension of these academic programs was decided in the last ordinary session of the University Congress, according to a report presented by the Higher Education and Research Commission.

The undergraduate programs affected by this measure are: Food Science and Technology, Engineering in Clean Energies, Engineering in Sustainable Food Production, Regional Development, Biotechnology, Communication Sociology, and Agroecology. The Director of Higher Education at UAG, Santiago Victoria Saavedra, formally requested the suspension of these programs through an official letter dated March 10.

According to the UAG School Regulations, academic groups must have a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 50 students in order to continue operating. If this requirement is not met, approval from the School Administration Directorate is required for its continuity. The University Council of UAG approved the agreement to suspend the undergraduate programs without specifying an action plan for the affected students or whether there will be alternatives for relocation in other programs.

This measure has raised questions about the educational offerings and the conditions that have led to the decrease in enrollment. The lack of enrolled students has led the university to temporarily suspend seven undergraduate programs, while three programs have already been reformed due to low demand that made their continuity unfeasible, as determined in the University Congress.
