The company América Móvil, owned by the Mexican Carlos Slim, has announced its decision to continue investing in infrastructure in Mexico to ensure the continuity of its mobile and fixed telecommunications services despite possible regulatory changes on the horizon, including the reform initiative to the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law that is being debated in the Congress of the Union. Renato Flores Cartas, Deputy Director of Communication and Government Relations of América Móvil and Grupo Carso, stated that the company will continue to grow and make significant investments in infrastructure, regardless of any regulatory conditions that may arise.
América Móvil is expected to invest around 6.7 billion dollars by 2025 to expand its tower infrastructure, fiber optics, and advance the deployment of its 5G network. In a press conference to present new service offerings in prepaid and postpaid modalities, Flores Cartas highlighted the company's commitment to continue investing in the country. He also mentioned that, for the moment, América Móvil will maintain a neutral stance regarding the possible regulatory changes that are coming with the reforms to the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law.
The Federal Telecommunications Institute recently imposed additional measures on América Móvil as the Preponderant Economic Agent of Telecommunications that impact its relationship with end customers. In response, Telcel, a subsidiary of América Móvil, launched a new service offering called 'Telcel Libre,' which allows users to switch without contractual obligations between prepaid and postpaid modalities. Patricia Raquel Hevia Coto, Director of Operations for Region 9 of Telcel, explained that this initiative aims to provide users with more telecommunications service options, including higher data volume and unlimited access to social networks, without contractual ties.
