Secretary of the Economy Marcelo Ebrard rejected claims that foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mexico is slowing down and announced a new record has been reached. He stated that FDI reached nearly $41 billion by the third quarter of the year, a 15% increase from the previous year. "This is important because this pace of foreign direct investment means that investors from all over the world are deciding to invest in Mexico to a greater extent than we had expected," the official said. Ebrard also highlighted a greater growth in new investments, which rose from $2 billion last year to $6 billion in this period; however, reinvestment of earnings still accounts for the largest share of FDI. Ebrard explained that new investments are primarily made in the energy sector, followed by banking centers, infrastructure projects, and finally the financial sector. "It has to do with the arrival in Mexico of what we could call a new economy centered on data from artificial intelligence and energy, because they are very closely linked," he said. The investment data reflects the bet in favor of our country and the confidence in the government of Sheinbaum. He insisted that these data show that internationally "the bet is in favor of our country" and highlighted that from 2018 to this year, FDI has grown by almost 70%. In this way, Ebrard rejected Moody's warning about a slowdown in investment due to uncertainty in the trade agreement with the United States (T-MEC), presenting the data during this Wednesday's morning press conference at the National Palace. "It means confidence in the government of Sheinbaum and the positive expectations about Mexico," he said and predicted a good trade resolution between the country and the United States. This morning, the government also presented the plan to develop a supercomputing network with a "supercomputer," which, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum, will be the largest in Latin America. According to Jorge Luis Pérez Hernández, National Coordinator of Digital Infrastructure, with this project, it will be possible to work on meteorological models, image processing for agriculture, customs information analysis, and language models with artificial intelligence.
