Mexico's Cultural Sector: Growth and Economic Contribution

From 2008 to 2024, Mexico's cultural sector showed steady growth, contributing 2.8% to the country's GDP. Key growth drivers were music, design, and digital content, while crafts and the audiovisual industry showed a decline. The sector created over 1.4 million jobs.


Mexico's Cultural Sector: Growth and Economic Contribution

From 2008 to 2024, the sector's average annual increase was 0.9 percentage points. The areas with the greatest contribution were crafts, with 18.4%; digital content and internet — such as access and transmission of digital content —, with 18.1%; audiovisual media — such as television or film —, with 17.2%; and design and creative services, with 14.5%. This meant a contribution of 2.8% to the GDP of the entire economy. Market activities — carried out by private agents and generating cultural goods and services for profit — contributed 2.21% of the sector's GDP; household-related activities — such as voluntary work in organizing cultural events or street vending of cultural products — contributed 0.38%; and public management activities — activities carried out by government units that help facilitate access, dissemination, development, and strengthening of cultural activities —, with 0.17 percent. Music and concerts: the area with the highest growth It is also detailed that the GDP of the cultural sector grew by 1.2%, while the total economy increased by 1.3 percent. The areas that decreased the most were crafts (3.8%), and audiovisual media (3.6%). The economic activities of the cultural sector generated 1,430,528 jobs, equivalent to 3.5% of total jobs in the economy. Meanwhile, the sectors with the highest growth in 2024 were music and concerts (14.9%), design and creative services (7.7%), as well as visual and plastic arts (5.3%). These provide an overview of the dimension, evolution, and composition of the cultural sector in the country. For the preparation of the document, international statistical guidelines and standards were considered, which, the agency reported, allows for the evaluation of both goods and services produced in the market (and related to culture) and activities generated from households and public management. According to the information presented, in 2024, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the cultural sector amounted to 865,682 million pesos. Compared to 2023, a decrease of 0.2% was observed, representing a loss of 2,852 jobs. The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) presented the results of the update of the Satellite Account of Culture of Mexico 2024.
