Gas Station Owners Clash with Mexican Government

Mexico's gas station owners association accuses the government of price controls and calls for a more constructive dialogue. Tensions in the LP gas sector are rising.

Gas Station Owners Clash with Mexican Government

The president of the liquefied petroleum gas (GLP) association, Rocío Robles Serrano, stated that if we continue to manage prices, people tend to invest less, and there are risks to security. She recommended the guild attempt a more 'empathetic' dialogue with the current government, meaning it should consider its perspective, such as the issue of impacts on poverty. However, Robles Serrano herself acknowledged that this is a strategy that has already been attempted without success so far. It is worth recalling that just a few weeks ago, the guild faced a clash of discourse with the Ministry of Energy and Pemex over the supply of LP gas, which gas station owners claim has not yet been fully resolved. While some agreements have been reached, such as new adjustments to tariffs, sector participants privately affirm that this policy is 'freezing' the market. The issue arose during a speech given at the forum by José Antonio Mead, former Secretary of Energy and Finance during the governments of Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto, who agreed with the guild that this practice is not proving favorable. Gas station owners are contradicting Sener on the supply of LP gas. He gave the example that a high percentage of people still use burning wood. Despite the government of Claudia Sheinbaum's promises of dialogue, gas station owners accuse them of not finding that openness amidst a series of challenges that are straining the LP gas sector, such as insecurity, shortages, and price controls. At the GLP congress organized by AMEXGAS, its head, Rocío Robles Serrano, acknowledged that the challenge is to improve dialogue with the federal government, as she recognized that a year into the government, 'there has been a dialogue of the deaf because it seems we are not speaking the same language.' It should be noted that this is the first gas station owners' congress within Sheinbaum's administration, however, no high-ranking official from the energy sector was present. In front of the guild's leaders, the president of this association assured that the goal is that next year they will achieve a 'more honest dialogue where distribution and the user are at the center of the discussion.' In the sector, the persistent concern is the price control established during Andrés Manuel López Obrador's previous term. 'It is a reflection that we are doing something wrong.'
