Mexico Insists on Tariff Removal and Dependency Reduction

Secretary of the Economy Marcelo Ebrard reported that negotiations with the United States are advancing towards the review of the USMCA, where Mexico insists on the removal of tariffs on steel and aluminum. 'Our proposal is to renew the treaty, eliminate tariffs between partners, and coordinate actions to reduce dependencies,' he stated. Ebrard also mentioned that Mexico is preparing meetings with China to discuss tariffs and trade regulations, in parallel to the USMCA review. In response to Beijing's complaint about Mexican tariffs, Ebrard assured that 'Mexico has nothing against China.' However, he highlighted that a major challenge will be balancing the trade relationship, given Mexico's limited export capacity to China compared to the volume of imports from that country. The Secretary of the Economy emphasized that in the pharmaceutical industry, dependence exceeds 80%. 'If the raw materials are not received, medication cannot be produced,' he added.
