The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that Cold Front number 27 will cause rain and showers in Baja California and Sonora, with expected snowfall and sleet in the mountains of Baja California. For Saturday, February 15, it is forecasted that this system will extend towards the northwest, north, and northeast, which will imply strong winds and dust storms in Chihuahua and Coahuila.
Cold Front 27 will enter the northwest of Mexico and will combine with a polar trough and a polar jet stream, according to the SMN report. Last September, the National Water Commission (Conagua) had anticipated that for the 2024-2025 Cold Front season, at least 48 frontal systems and seven winter storms were expected in the country. It was mentioned that December would be the coldest month, followed by January and February in that order.
The cold front season in Mexico runs from October to May, although low temperatures are uneven across all regions. The first cold front of the 2024-2025 season entered the country at the end of August. The forecast indicated that January and February would be the months with the most winter storms, and that cold fronts notably cause drops in temperature, rain, fog, strong winds, and elevated surf in some areas.
According to reports from Conagua Climate, Cold Front 26 is currently in the north of Mexico and the entry of number 27 is expected. Considering that around 48 systems were estimated during the winter season, 21 cold fronts are still expected in Mexico for the rest of 2025. Cold Front 26 extends in the northwest and western Gulf of Mexico, with rain and downpours present in other regions.
On February 14, Conagua indicated that cold front 27 will enter the northwest of Mexico, where it will cause strong and very strong winds in the north and northwest of the country. This phenomenon primarily affects the northern, northwest, and western areas of the Gulf of Mexico. On the other hand, Cold Front 26 continues to affect with dust storms in several regions such as Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Nuevo León, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, and San Luis Potosí.
Additionally, it is expected that system 27 will generate rain and showers on Sunday, February 16 in the states of the Yucatán Peninsula, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco.
