Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes southern Mexico

A moderate earthquake was felt this morning in southern Mexico. According to official reports from the National Seismological Service (SSN), the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 and was centered 77 km southwest of Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, at a depth of about 16 km. Some media also reported that the tremor was felt with its epicenter also towards the northeast of Matías Romero, Oaxaca, at 07:57, but it is highlighted that the seismic alert was not activated in Mexico City due to the low magnitude of the event. In the same report, minor movements were recorded in Guerrero and Chiapas in the early hours of the day, with magnitudes of around 3.2 and 3.6 respectively, which are also part of the seismic record for this Sunday. Although a magnitude 4.0 earthquake can be felt and attract the attention of those who were awake at the time of the movement, it does not represent a major risk or expected structural damage. This type of earthquake, with magnitudes around 4.0, is usually felt in areas near the epicenter but rarely causes significant damage, although it may be perceptible to the population on solid ground. The SSN itself issued a bulletin informing about the seismic event. However, this type of event is a good opportunity to remember basic safety measures in case of earthquakes, such as staying away from glass and objects that may fall, and being informed about how to act.
