According to the Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties (LFPDPPP), it is legal to install security cameras in your home to protect your property, as long as they do not invade public areas, do not infringe on the privacy of others, and are installed within the boundaries of your property.
It is advisable to inform neighbors about the existence of surveillance cameras through visible signs or at neighborhood meetings, and in most cases, explicit consent from the individuals involved is required. If you cannot install cameras in certain areas, alternatives such as security alarms, smart locks, or improving lighting in vulnerable areas can be considered.
The Federal Consumer Attorney's Office (Profeco) highlights some key points to consider for a legal installation such as the protection of property, respect for privacy, and notifying third parties about the presence of cameras. Additionally, there are places where cameras cannot be placed without prior authorization, such as private areas in businesses, restricted spaces such as schools, hospitals, and churches, and work areas like offices, restrooms, and employee cafeterias.
Regarding audio recording, stricter regulations apply due to the sensitivity of the information that may be captured. Complying with regulations and respecting the rights of third parties is essential to ensure home security without breaking the law and maintaining a peaceful and safe environment for everyone.
