Main Causes of Mortality in Mexico

Heart diseases, diabetes mellitus, and malignant tumors are the leading causes of death in Mexico, resulting in 300,357 deaths in 2024. Poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, and stress exacerbate these health issues, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to improve public health in the country.

Main Causes of Mortality in Mexico

Recently, it has been reported that heart diseases, diabetes mellitus, and malignant tumors continue to be the leading causes of death in Mexico, claiming the lives of thousands of people. The first three causes mentioned account for a total of 300,357 deaths during a specific period, which represents a high percentage of deaths in the country.

Heart diseases, also known as cardiovascular diseases, top the list of the main causes of death in Mexico. These types of conditions have become a recurring health problem in the country, attributed to factors such as poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, and stress.

On the other hand, diabetes mellitus, a chronic problem affecting thousands of people, encompasses a group of diseases that impact the way the body processes glucose in the blood. This condition can lead to complications affecting various organs, such as the kidneys, eyes, and nervous system, potentially resulting in death from renal failure, heart attacks, or strokes in severe cases.

Malignant tumors, or cancer, are abnormal tissue formations caused by uncontrolled cell reproduction that do not serve a physiological function in the organism. These cancerous cells can rapidly spread to other parts of the body through metastasis, complicating the prognosis. Common cancers in Mexico include breast, prostate, and lung cancer.

Despite medical advances that have allowed for the early detection of many cancers, the lack of early detection and limited access to adequate treatments remain factors influencing the mortality rate in the country. Atherosclerosis, a condition affecting the heart and blood vessels, is one of the fundamental causes of these cardiovascular diseases.

In Mexico, type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent and is often closely linked to lifestyle, including an unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. Preliminary figures from the Statistics of Registered Deaths (EDR) for January to September 2024, released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), reveal an increase of 14,254 deaths compared to the same period in 2023, with a total of 610,404 registered deaths.
