The Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Chiapas arrested the mayor of Bella Vista, Rosember López, accused of having alleged links to organized crime, according to Governor Eduardo Ramírez. The detention was carried out under an arrest warrant for abuse of authority to the detriment of public service and society.
López's capture occurred on the federal highway Mexico-Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, specifically on the La Trinitaria-Chamic section, in the Santa Teresa neighborhood. The mayor was traveling in a Toyota vehicle with Chiapas plates and was detained by the Investigation Police after verifying his identity.
The arrested individual was placed in the custody of the Public Prosecutor's Office, which will determine his legal situation. The detention comes at a time when Mexico's southern border is facing a dispute between drug cartels over control of routes for human trafficking and narcotics from Central America.
Bella Vista has been the scene of violence linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and Chiapas Guatemala Cartel since 2021, resulting in numerous disappearances, deaths, and population displacement.
Rosember López, elected mayor with the local Chiapas Unidos party in the June elections, is the second mayor detained for alleged ties to organized crime in the current administration of Ramírez Aguilar, which began last month. Now, the detainee will be at the disposal of a judge, who will decide his legal situation in the coming hours.
