Mexican Public Supports Sovereignty Over US Collaboration

Recent polls show a significant shift in Mexican public opinion against US involvement in national issues, with 74% favoring sovereignty under Trump's second term.

Mexican Public Supports Sovereignty Over US Collaboration

A recent poll conducted in Mexico revealed a significant shift in public opinion regarding collaboration with the United States in the fight against organized crime, especially with Donald Trump's possible return to the presidency.

In October of a particular year, 46% of respondents leaned towards defending national sovereignty and avoiding U.S. interference on this issue. However, by the same month, the percentage in favor of defending sovereignty changed to 53%. With Trump as president in his second term, support for collaboration drastically decreased to 24%, less than half of the initial level.

Surprisingly, 74% of respondents showed support for defending sovereignty and preventing the United States from participating in the country's internal affairs, reflecting a significant change in the perception of the Mexican population.

The position in favor of protecting sovereignty is majority among supporters of the "fourth transformation," as well as among opponents and those who do not identify with any political party. This change in perception is reflected in the national survey conducted by El Financiero from January 23 to 27, where 400 people were interviewed.

Regarding collaboration with the United States in the fight against organized crime, in March 2023, the majority of respondents (53%) favored greater collaboration. However, when asked if they would agree to U.S. military forces intervening in Mexico to combat criminal groups, 62% expressed opposition.

In relation to the designation of drug cartels as international terrorist groups by the United States, 68% of respondents considered this idea negative. The survey, which was conducted by phone with 900 adult Mexicans between January 8 and 14, as well as from January 23 to 27, revealed a clear stance against foreign intervention in national security matters.
