The PAN, PRI, and Movimiento Ciudadano parties expressed their rejection of several aspects of the bill regarding the reform of the Infonavit Law. In particular, they opposed the creation of a subsidiary company that would manage workers' resources for housing construction.
PRI Senator Claudia Anaya Mota warned that this new company would not be subject to audits by the Superior Audit of the Federation, as the funds would come from private savings of the workers. For her part, Mely Romero from the PRI pointed out that the reform would give the Federal Executive the power to directly appoint the General Director of Infonavit, which would imply absolute government control over the institute.
Ricardo Anaya Cortés, PAN coordinator in the Senate, criticized the lack of substantial modifications to the bill and emphasized the lack of deeper debate. Meanwhile, Senator Alejandra Barrales from Movimiento Ciudadano proposed that the new subsidiary company be tripartite, including workers in its structure to guarantee their representation.
On the other hand, Morena Senator Manuel Huerta Ladrón de Guevara defended the reform, arguing that it seeks to break with the profit schemes of the past, guaranteeing accessible credits for workers. Huerta Ladrón de Guevara emphasized that, far from the initially mentioned 2.4 trillion pesos, in 2025, 72 billion 366 million pesos will be allocated for housing construction from the savings of workers in Infonavit.
The bill was sent to the Board of Directors to be presented to the Senate Plenary in the session on Thursday, February 13, for its vote. The reform continues to be the subject of debate in the Senate, and its future will depend on how the controversies raised by the opposition are resolved. The joint commissions of Legislative Studies and Urban Planning and Housing of the Senate approved the reform bill, which includes the creation of a subsidiary company responsible for the construction of housing with resources from the workers' housing fund, with 18 votes in favor, 7 against, and 2 abstentions.
