Willy Ochoa Gallegos, former interim governor of Chiapas, has issued a warning to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding potential security risks for the United States stemming from the appointment of Rutilio Escandón Cadenas as consul in Miami. Ochoa indicated that during Escandón's administration, he facilitated the establishment and development of criminal activities, which, in his opinion, could pose a real threat to the public safety of the United States.
In a letter sent to the Republican leader, Ochoa urged the U.S. government to review the moral quality and governmental work of Escandón Cadenas, as well as to carefully assess the possible implications of granting him asylum and diplomatic protection. The former governor mentioned several public and evident reasons that, in his view, support his request, such as the notable increase in violence and crime, the growing presence of armed criminal groups, a large-scale humanitarian crisis, institutional disintegration, and corruption.
For these reasons, Ochoa called for a review of whether Rutilio Escandón's presence aligns with the principles of security, the fight against drug trafficking, and illegal immigration, important issues promoted by the current U.S. administration. He also requested that negligence, corruption, or complicity with diplomatic privileges should not be tolerated, implying that support for questionable profiles could send contradictory messages to the peoples of Mexico and the United States.
