The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated at a press conference that she is not afraid of the threats from her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump. In response to the possible designation of the cartels as international terrorist organizations by Trump, Sheinbaum emphasized the defense of Mexican sovereignty.
"They can call it whatever they want, but we defend sovereignty," she asserted. The Mexican leader highlighted the importance of conducting joint investigations, such as those related to money laundering, but questioned the effectiveness of actions in the United States to address the issue of drug trafficking since that is where the drugs are sold.
Sheinbaum stressed that, while there is dialogue with the United States at this moment, Mexico will not allow its sovereignty to be compromised. In light of Trump's statements about mass deportations and his offer of "help" to combat drug trafficking, the Mexican president reiterated that her country does not defend the cartels or organized crime, but defends its sovereignty and has the backing of its people.
Negotiations between both countries this week in Washington will address the suspension of tariffs on Mexican products and the security strategy to combat drug trafficking and prevent the trafficking of fentanyl to the United States. Sheinbaum insisted on the importance of collaboration and coordination without external interventionism and reaffirmed that she does not feel fear in the face of the threats posed.
