Mexico's New Strict Anti-Drug Policy

Lilly Téllez proposes life sentences for drug and arms trafficking in Mexico. Foreign nationals caught trafficking will face maximum penalties. Claudia Sheinbaum has also signed a decree to intensify measures against international traffickers.

Mexico's New Strict Anti-Drug Policy

The famous businesswoman proposed life imprisonment in Mexico for those involved in drug trafficking, intending to send a tough message internationally. PAN senator Lilly Téllez has been particularly combative regarding this, advocating for a more aggressive strategy than the war against the cartels undertaken by Felipe Calderón.

In line with this harder stance, foreigners caught trafficking drugs and weapons in Mexico will now face preventive detention with the maximum penalty. This approach, also backed by Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, aims to establish a strong position against international traffickers and arms dealers.

Opposing voices are present in this scenario, such as that of the Morena plurinominal, Patricia Armendáriz, who has expressed her opinions straightforwardly. The official position is clear: "Mexico must be respected." However, critical voices are not far behind, questioning whether this strategy will truly be effective in containing international criminals, considering the lessons learned from previous experiences in the fight against drug trafficking.

In light of the demand for a more vigorous policy, supported by various prominent political figures, the debate about the effectiveness and possible implications of such a radical stance remains unresolved.
