Juan Manuel Delgado, lawyer of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, commented that the alleged threat made by the Mexican drug lord to the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum for repatriation was taken out of context. Delgado explained that the letter sent to Mexico by Zambada only demanded his right to return to Mexican territory, without any threats related to information that the drug trafficker might possess.
"Some media have raised suspicions about this, but there are no negotiations with the United States Government to reach an agreement," declared Delgado. So far, Zambada has no deals with any American agency, which could lead him to face a possible death sentence.
The lawyer detailed that the Mexican Government has not yet responded to Zambada's repatriation request, who has a deadline of 15 business days to receive a response. The lawyer emphasized that there is no time pressure and that an official decision is expected in the coming weeks.
Regarding the content of the letter sent by 'El Mayo' Zambada to Sheinbaum's administration, the drug lord requested that Mexico intervene so that the United States would agree to his repatriation, warning of possible consequences in the bilateral relationship if no action was taken.
Zambada indicated that the Mexican Government should defend its rights, arguing that if it did not, illegal kidnappings of politicians and Mexican officials by U.S. authorities could be carried out. The drug trafficker sought to avoid a death sentence and violations of Mexican sovereignty.
Sheinbaum did not elaborate on the topic, announcing that Attorney Gertz Manero would provide more details about the case in a later conference.
