Morena Considers Delaying Nepotism Law to 2030

The Ecologist Green Party and Morena have been in discussions regarding the enforcement of the ruling that prohibits nepotism in elected positions. The Green Party proposed to postpone the implementation of this measure until 2030, delaying its application by three years from the initially proposed 2027 in the proposal supported by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The possibility of modifying the deadline has been communicated by Morena’s coordinator in the Senate, Adán Augusto López Hernández, to the members of his bench, responding to the pressure exerted by the Green Party. This modification would allow figures like Ruth González, wife of the governor of San Luis Potosí, Ricardo Gallardo; Félix Salgado Macedonio, from Guerrero; and Saúl Monreal Ávila, from Zacatecas, to participate in the 2027 elections.

The President of the Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, and the coordinator of the Green Party, Manuel Velasco, confirmed that negotiations are taking place in this regard. Noroña emphasized the importance of maintaining unity in the movement, assuring that the measure was agreed upon with President Sheinbaum.

According to Manuel Velasco, since the beginning of the discussion, his party had requested the postponement of the enforcement of the nepotism prohibition, keeping the reelection blocked until 2030. However, the deputy coordinator of Morena, Ignacio Mier, stated that the adjustments in the transitional articles would not benefit Salgado Macedonio or Monreal, as the party’s statutes already prevent their candidacy for governor of Guerrero and Zacatecas.

The Senate's Constitutional Points and Legislative Studies commissions, controlled by Morena, approved the ruling that prohibits nepotism starting from 2027 and reelection starting from 2030 without changes on February 18. The Green Party will present a reserve to extend the application of this measure until 2030, aligning it with the restriction on reelection.

This Tuesday, February 25, the Senate will discuss the constitutional reform aimed at prohibiting consecutive reelection and nepotism in elected positions. The pressure exerted by the Green Party tests the cohesion of the ruling coalition.
