Sheinbaum and Trump Discuss Bilateral Cooperation

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has maintained a series of productive conversations with former U.S. President Donald Trump. In a morning conference on April 17, Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of dialogue to achieve agreements that benefit both countries.

The exchange continued when Trump posted on Truth Social about his positive conversation with the president of Mexico, followed by the phrase "Today, Italy!" Later, on May 1, they had another call focused on trade issues, keeping bilateral cooperation as a focus.

Anna Kelly, spokesperson for the White House, emphasized the importance of protecting Americans from threats such as foreign terrorist and drug trafficking groups. Trump has openly expressed the possibility of taking unilateral measures if Mexico does not act against the cartels.

During a 45-minute phone call on April 16, Trump pressured Sheinbaum to allow the participation of the U.S. Army in actions against criminal organizations in Mexico. However, the public stance of the president is to focus on cooperation in intelligence, rejecting direct military presence on Mexican territory.

Despite this focus on security and trade, Trump has mentioned the possibility of using drones to attack fentanyl laboratories and U.S. Special Forces to confront drug kingpins. Although conversations between both leaders have been described as productive, the possibility of greater collaboration on international security issues remains uncertain.

In summary, the conversations between Sheinbaum and Trump have addressed trade issues, security cooperation, and the possible intervention of U.S. forces in Mexico, with mixed stances on how to address the threat of organized crime and drug trafficking in the region.
