Mexican authorities carried out the 'Enjambre' operation, which has resulted in the arrest of incumbent mayors from both the opposition and the ruling party, MORENA. This morning, Secretary Omar García Harfuch announced new detentions within this operation. Specifically, Diego Rivera Navarro, the mayor of Tequila, Jalisco, from the MORENA party, was arrested. He is accused of extorting beer and tequila companies, as well as having ties to the criminal syndicate of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Along with the mayor, three municipal officials were detained: the Director of Public Security, the Director of Cadastre and Property Tax, and the Director of Public Works. This is a major blow to MORENA in Jalisco, as the mayor's connections to the cartel do not end there. Rivera Navarro was previously investigated for the alleged crime of 'apology of the crime.' This followed an incident in May 2025 when the musical group 'Los Alegres del Barranco' performed at an event where images of CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho,' were projected while the song 'El Dueño del Palenque' was played. García Harfuch confirmed the detention of the MORENA mayor from Tequila, linked to the Jalisco Cartel. Furthermore, Rivera Navarro had previously been denounced three times for exercising political violence of gender against female councilors. However, what is causing a stir in the Security Cabinet is the promotion that President Claudia Sheinbaum herself gave to Diego Rivera Navarro in 2024, urging people to vote for the then-MORENA candidate to become mayor of Tequila. The video of Sheinbaum with Rivera Navarro and Claudia Delgadillo, then a gubernatorial candidate for Jalisco from MORENA, circulated widely on social networks. In his social media profile, Rivera Navarro boasted photos with Governor Pablo Lemus, national MORENA leader Luisa María Alcalde, and Undersecretary of the Interior César Yáñez. In a recording from the campaign period, Sheinbaum is heard saying, 'He is our next municipal president, and we are going to support him a lot.'
