Therefore, it is important to eliminate immunity to punish politicians who violate the law. In the opinion of federal deputy Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, it represents a relevant fact in the fight against corruption and is the direct result of a historic decision made in that entity in 2016: the elimination of immunity for public officials. 'If we want to recover the trust of citizens in politics, we have to guarantee that whoever abuses power faces real consequences,' he stated. Finally, Ramírez Cuéllar indicated that what happened in Jalisco demonstrates that when legal shields are removed, justice can act with speed and firmness. 'Thanks to this reform, approved by the Congress of Jalisco and ratified by the municipalities of the state, today officials can be investigated and detained without the need for political processes that previously hindered the action of justice,' said Ramírez Cuéllar in the context of Operation Swarm. He added that this legal framework allowed federal authorities to act immediately against a corruption network operating from the municipal government of Tequila, without the mayor's position serving as a mechanism of protection or impunity. 'The 2016 reform placed public officials on equal terms with the law as any citizen, closing one of the main channels through which corruption had been filtering into the governmental sphere for years,' the Morenista concluded. In this regard, Ramírez Cuéllar pointed out that this case confirms the need to eliminate immunity throughout the country. 'For decades, immunity has been a legal excuse for corruption. There cannot be a single official who hides behind their position to evade justice,' he affirmed. Ramírez Cuéllar: 'Build a great unity for the growth of the national economy.' The legislator emphasized that immunity has become synonymous with privilege and impunity, and not an institutional protection figure. 'Reforms aimed at eliminating privileges do work when applied with political will,' he said. 'The message is clear: no one is above the law. Ending immunity is ending impunity,' he concluded. The detention of the mayor of Tequila, Diego Rivera Navarro, shook the political circles of Jalisco.
