Green Party Demands Ministry in Exchange for Reform Support

Mexico's Green Party is using the electoral reform deadlock to pressure the government, demanding leadership of the Environment Secretariat. This is part of their strategy to increase influence and prepare for the 2027 elections.

Green Party Demands Ministry in Exchange for Reform Support

The Green Party (PVEM) is seeking to secure significant political candidacies across the country for the 2027 elections and is now aiming to take over the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). This could be the first federal secretariat led by the 'toucan' (the party's nickname) in Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's administration. The leadership of PVEM knows that without achieving these two points, it will lose influence in negotiations with Morena, which could diminish its electoral role in the future. Due to this, the Green Party has hardened its position in negotiations, which for now do not seem to be reaching a conclusion. Amid the deadlock in negotiations over electoral reform, the 'toucan' sees a special opportunity to advance one of its historical demands. Furthermore, the Green Party highlights that various agencies related to this issue are not under their control either. Negotiations on the electoral reform pushed by President Claudia Sheinbaum remain stalled, and it is currently unknown when it will be approved. However, conversations between the parties continue, and now, according to federal sources who spoke with LPO, the toucan's leadership is pressuring to receive the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources in exchange for its support for the presidential initiative. From the very beginning, the position of this environmental party was uncomfortable for President Claudia Sheinbaum, who insists on her electoral reform. This challenge has not yet been resolved, but to add more pressure, the toucan is now pressing to take over the leadership of Semarnat, which is currently headed by Alicia Bárcena. Sources from the environmental party's leadership state that the new demand makes sense within the structural axis that defines the party: care for the environment and ecology. In this regard, they assert, the secretariat in charge of these issues should be in their hands, something they failed to achieve under the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and, so far, with Claudia Sheinbaum. The first is to begin outlining the 2027 elections, for which public officials will have to resign; and the second, to relaunch the national government amid a drop in polls analyzed privately in the capital's Zócalo. Berdegué seeks to restructure Agriculture, but this generates discomfort and questioning. With this scenario, the Green Party hardens its rejection of electoral reform because it knows that without its votes and without the PT's support, it cannot be approved. As detailed by LPO, the toucan insists on leading the 4T coalition's ticket for the governorships of San Luis Potosí and Quintana Roo, where existing tensions threaten to break and divide the ruling alliance. The toucan's position was expected from the first minute of the negotiations: its total rejection of the elimination of proportional representation and public financing of politics, two facets that are fundamental to strengthening its territorial and political structure throughout the country. As detailed by LPO, the leadership of the Green Party and the PT oppose the reduction of proportional candidacies and the public financing of political parties. Likewise, Boy was appointed head of Profepa by Claudia Sheinbaum, but the toucan clarified that position: 'That position was for Mariana due to her relationship with the Doctor, but it was not for the party.' The Green Party's pressure comes at a time when speculation grows about possible changes in the cabinet headed by Claudia Sheinbaum. Various sources with access to the National Palace have told this editorial board that changes could occur in March with two main objectives. For example, during the past six-year term, the PAOT of Mexico City was led by Mariana Boy, but with Clara Brugada, Mónica Vietnica Alegre González was appointed, who does not belong to the party's hard core.
