Mexico Considers Fracking for Natural Gas Extraction

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed her government is analyzing fracking to extract natural gas, aiming to reduce U.S. dependency and boost energy sovereignty. Despite controversy and environmental concerns, experts are examining modern, less harmful techniques for the process.

Mexico Considers Fracking for Natural Gas Extraction

The Mexican government is analyzing the possibility of using hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract natural gas. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed this, stating it is a topic of analysis under the question of how to strengthen energy sovereignty. She emphasized that this is merely a study and everything will be transparent. Sheinbaum, who had previously opposed fracking, mentioned that a working group of experts is now analyzing the feasibility of using less environmentally harmful techniques. The president stressed the importance of producing more gas while increasing renewable energy sources and ensuring community acceptance if the measure is approved. Experts note that modern fracking often uses other substances instead of water, and when water is needed, it uses treated wastewater to avoid consuming potable resources. This issue has sparked debate, especially in Tamaulipas, where it was noted that fracking is not prohibited. The discussion follows mixed messages from the government, with the head of Pemex defending the technology for new reserves, while the head of Sener denied its use.
