Oaxaca Court Sentences Man to 65 Years for Death of Two Children

The Oaxaca State Court of Appeals sentenced Wilber A.C. to 65 years in prison after finding him guilty of the crimes of aggravated abandonment of persons and qualified homicide, as well as abandonment of persons in favor of his three minor children. According to the investigations presented by the State Attorney General's Office, the convicted shirked his legal obligations of care and upbringing when the minors were left in his charge at a private home located in Juchitán de Zaragoza, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. The authorities proved that the father's failure to provide care forced the children, aged 9, 8, and 6, to sell snacks in public streets and local night establishments to survive, lacking adult supervision and basic conditions for well-being and safety. As stated in the criminal file, this situation of neglect led to the discovery of two of the minors dead on February 18, 2023, in the vicinity of the Juchitán-Ixtaltepec highway, within the jurisdiction of the municipality of El Espinal. Regarding the initial procedures, police reports indicated that the victims' bodies, identified as Perla and Daniel, showed no gunshot wounds or stab wounds at the time of their discovery. It is presumed they were suffocated. The State Attorney General's Office of Oaxaca maintained during the trial that the accused deprived the victims of a safe environment and adequate nutrition, factors that directly contributed to the fatal outcome. The official communiqué specified that the verdict includes a prison sentence and the corresponding payment for damages.
