National PAN councilor Guillermo Vega Guerrero announced a new phase of openness to citizens, while warning that 'undesirable' individuals will not be admitted to participate in the elections. Party leaders emphasize the importance of integrity and a transparent selection process.

PAN Opens Candidacies but Excludes 'Undesirable' Profiles

Following the opening of the Action National Party (PAN) to citizen candidacies, national councilor Guillermo Vega Guerrero warned that profiles considered 'undesirable' will not have a place within the internal process. 'I greatly celebrate that Jorge Romero has opened the party to citizens.' Although he acknowledged that this decision is not in his hands, he stated that he would 'put a checkmark' on those types of profiles who arrive threatening, shouting, and kicking. However, he highlighted that this opening to the public is positive, as it will allow the arrival of 'new blood' that could position itself in mayoral and federal deputy positions, although he also recognized that it 'puts pressure' on the party members, as it is no longer enough to belong to the party, but numbers and citizen acceptance will now be evaluated. 'This is an announcement that pleases in public, but in private it can generate some kind of fear. I think he didn't say it, and I'm going to say it, but never, in brackets, never for the undesirables.' He emphasized that if any person wishes to register, the minimum qualities required are integrity, good reputation, and a vocation for service, but if they do not have this, they will not be able to 'take advantage' of this opening. This was in response to the intentions of profiles like Miguel Nava Alvarado, former ombudsman, whom he considers does not fit the profile that the party seeks to promote, as they are not looking for people who announce their candidacy intentions by challenging the national leader. That is to say, it is no longer a requirement to simply be a PAN member.' When questioned whether there would be a 'level playing field,' he assured that this would be guaranteed with public, transparent, and timely calls, as well as the evaluation of personal track records. In the same vein, the state leader of the party, Martín Arango, specified that there would be filters such as interviews, citizen backing, debates, and idea-contrast exercises, although he reiterated that the party remains firm in integrating upstanding citizens who want to contribute to Mexico. 'First, a call must be issued, subsequently an interview stage will be held, where this stage will obviously serve as a filter to see that there are upstanding people who want to be part of this process.' Therefore, he indicated that profiles such as the Morena federal deputy Gilberto Herrera, or those with accusations of embezzlement, will not have a place in the 'whites and blues' (PAN's colors).
