Mexican Senator Defends T-MEC Against US Protectionist Pressure

Mexican Senator Waldo Fernández sharply criticized protectionist measures from US senators, arguing that attacks on North American production integration via T-MEC undermine the entire region's economy, increase costs, and threaten competitiveness.

Mexican Senator Defends T-MEC Against US Protectionist Pressure

Senator Waldo Fernández insisted that the responsibility of North American parliamentarians must be to shield the region's economic future, not to feed decisions that fragment a strategic alliance that has proven key to sustaining jobs, investment, and development. Breaking that logic would be a mistake that would end up affecting everyone, he stated. The senator underscored that imposing measures against companies with a presence in Mexico would not only hit investment and legal certainty but would also increase costs for key sectors such as agriculture, construction, and infrastructure. 'It is a legal, economic, and strategic tool to protect employment, attract investment, and give certainty to a region that competes with global giants,' he affirmed. The T-MEC exists to strengthen North America as a bloc, not to weaken it with pressures that break productive chains built over years, the senator said. Waldo Fernández warned that singling out Mexico as if it were a threat to employment in the US distorts the reality of a deeply integrated industry, where shared production has allowed regional companies to remain competitive against emerging markets outside of North America. 'The relationship between Mexico, the United States, and Canada cannot be treated with a punitive vision or with short-term political interests. Our duty is to defend a treaty that has given strength to North America, not to yield to pressures that seek to divide what today makes us more competitive in the world,' he concluded. 'The T-MEC is not a destructive competition between partner countries.' In response to pressure from US Senators Tammy Baldwin and Bernie Moreno for the Department of Commerce to act against agricultural and construction machinery companies with operations in Mexico, the senator for the 4T in Nuevo León, Waldo Fernández, set a firm stance in defense of the T-MEC and the productive integration of North America. As president of the Follow-up Commission for the Review and Implementation of the T-MEC in the Senate of the Republic, Fernández González pointed out that this type of protectionist pressure is not only mistaken but dangerous for the region's economic future. 'When productive integration is attacked, not only is a plant or an investment at risk; the competitiveness of the entire region is put at risk.' The creation of jobs and the protection of investment are shared responsibilities.
