In the first two months of 2025, the Centro Norte Airport Group (OMA) has experienced significant growth in international passenger traffic compared to the same period of the previous year. During these two months, 690,553 international passengers were transported through the 13 airport terminals operated and managed by the company, representing a 17% increase from the 589,484 travelers the previous year.
This increase occurs in a context of uncertainty due to the proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on Mexican exports, and the insecurity present in various cities in the country. Despite these circumstances, OMA has achieved growth in international passenger traffic, although three of its airports reported a decrease in passenger flow, with San Luis Potosí, Tampico, and Zihuatanejo being the affected ones.
In contrast, the airports focused on business have shown outstanding performance in the two-month period. Monterrey recorded a 29.5% increase, Torreón 21.6%, and Chihuahua 13%, while San Luis Potosí experienced a drop of 0.6%. This growth is attributed to a greater interest in leisure, family, and business travel worldwide, highlighting the nearshoring phenomenon in Mexico, specifically in the northern region of the country.
In particular, in February 2025, international passenger traffic reported a global increase of 9.7%, evidencing a greater appetite for travel. Monterrey stood out with a 20.6% growth in this segment, demonstrating the potential of nearshoring in the region according to Monex, which also reported a quarterly growth of 8.1% in passenger traffic from the issuer between December 2024 and February 2025.
In light of these results, Monex indicated that, looking ahead, they will focus on operational performance, the appeal of nearshoring in the business segment, and advancements in inspections and maintenance of Volaris aircraft. This positive trend in international passenger traffic reflects an inflection point after previous downturns and projects an encouraging outlook for the airport sector in the future.
