Monterrey Monorail Construction Progress Exceeds 70%

The Government of Nuevo León is reporting progress exceeding 70% on the construction of Metrorrey's Lines 4 and 6, sources within the administration announced amid the uncertainty surrounding the administration's major project under Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda.

By June, they aim to have 30% of the line operational, running from the Aeropuerto station and the hotel zone to the eventual Y Griega station. Sources within the cabinet mention that the monorail saved costs, as a conventional, underground, or elevated project would have cost between 1.8 and 4 billion pesos per kilometer.

Regarding the inevitable controversies over damage to stormwater ducts, it was stated that the repairs are covered by the contracting company at no additional cost to the executive. "We will be running six trains, people can board them, but they will operate on a guest itinerary," sources from the cabinet indicated.

Currently, infrastructure progress is over 60%, with 6,936 elements built, including piles, structures, stations, etc., out of the 9,607 elements planned for the entire project. The line will be 34.4 kilometers long, with a construction rate of up to 1.5 kilometers per month (not linearly), and a cost of around 1.2 billion pesos per kilometer.

However, it will not be open to the public, and an accelerated system of transport units will be implemented to cover the demand from foreign and national tourists during the World Cup. Additionally, parallel induced works are being carried out alongside the monorail with CFE, Water and Drainage, and gas and telecommunication lines are also being established, all at a cost equivalent to 7% of the total project cost.

Furthermore, it is expected that by the end of the year, all monorail cars will arrive to expedite testing and deliver the project in 2027, before the end of the current administration's term. These cars are designed to reach speeds of 80 km/h and can carry over 700 passengers in a single journey.

"Testing will be conducted in summer, from Citadel to Y Griega."
