Karina Barrón's Detention: A Blow to PRI in Nuevo León

The Attorney General's Office of the Republic shook up the political landscape in Nuevo León this Sunday by detaining Karina Barrón, a former PRI Senate candidate and current member of Mayor Adrián De la Garza's cabinet. According to judicial sources, she is being charged with bribery and falsifying statements to authorities. Barrón is currently the closest political ally of Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas in Nuevo León. The detention is a blow to the national leader of the PRI, who is currently trying to solidify an alliance with the PAN for the 2027 gubernatorial race. Furthermore, Moreno Cárdenas comes from a difficult week because the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) did not like the PRI's handling of the operation in Tapalpa last Sunday: 'Alito' perhaps overstepped by ensuring that the operation, in which soldiers died, was carried out to please the United States. Barrón, for her part, was the leader's candidate to compete for the mayoralty of Monterrey, a project that is now deactivated because extortion is considered a serious crime: the arrest, according to judicial sources, was coordinated by Omar García Harfuch's man in the northern state. 'Alito' must be said, used his electoral alliance with Barrón to pressure the PAN with the possibility of not finalizing the alliance if certain demands were not met. The fall of the official clears the field, at least within the PRI, for local deputy Lorena De la Garza, who still has to dispute that candidacy with PAN aspirants such as Fernando Margáin or Iván Garza. The state Attorney General's Office also appears in a delicate situation because, always in tune with the PRI, it may suffer collateral effects in the case against Barrón. In MC, the judicial news is celebrated as an opportunity to sustain the fight with De la Garza but, even more importantly, because they believe it will further complicate the Front's candidate's ability to achieve good rapport with the Federal Government.
