Javier López Zavala's Potential Release Concerns Victim's Family

The former PRI candidate for governor of Puebla, Javier López Zavala, is identified as the alleged mastermind behind the femicide of Cecilia Monzón, and there is a possibility that he could be released before the trial against him takes place. The victim's family has reported that the substitute judge, Eliazer Melchor Aguilar, has ordered a hearing to decide whether to maintain the preventive detention of the accused, which would allow him to face the trial outside of prison.

In a statement, Cecilia Monzón's family explained that Javier López Zavala's defense has requested an amparo, arguing a supposed arbitrariness during the judicial procedure carried out on December 6. This led to an extension of the preventive detention until September 2025. The family warned that they will use all legal resources to overturn the amparo resolution and that a new hearing to extend the precautionary measure must be held within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, the family of activist Cecilia Monzón has requested the maximum sentence of 60 years in prison for the accused Javier López Zavala as the mastermind and Jair “N” and Silvestre N. as the material authors of the murder. In May, it will be three years since the femicide of Cecilia Monzón, and the lack of convictions has generated concern among the victim’s family.
