Call for Abortion Decriminalization in Querétaro

The Women's Secretariat of the federal government, led by Citlalli Hernández, announced the decision not to charge a 14-year-old girl in Querétaro, who had previously been accused by the state Attorney General of intentional homicide.

The head called on the local Congress of Querétaro to advance legislation that allows for the decriminalization of abortion in the state, reaffirming the federal government's commitment to women's rights. She expressed gratitude for the dialogue held with the state prosecutor and Governor Mauricio Kuri González.

This announcement was the result of the instruction from President Claudia Sheinbaum and work meetings with the Prosecutor of Querétaro, Víctor Antonio Jesús Hernández. The Attorney General decided to drop the charges against the minor, allowing her to begin a process of comprehensive recovery.

In light of this situation, measures were established to ensure the well-being of the girl: first, there will be comprehensive support from federal and state governments, aiming to secure her access to education and a promising future.

Additionally, an agreement will be signed to train the staff of the Querétaro Attorney General's Office in gender perspective, which will help improve the attention and handling of cases of violence and vulnerability. Furthermore, the Internal Control Body of the Attorney General's Office will be notified to initiate administrative processes against those public officials who have committed faults or omissions during the investigation.
