To commemorate the anniversary of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Wednesday, February 5, that she will send two new constitutional reforms to Congress for approval and subsequent publication.
From the Theater of the Republic in the city of Querétaro, the president reaffirmed her commitment to these reforms, previously mentioned during her campaign. Sheinbaum confirmed the reforms of non-reelection and anti-nepotism as part of her commitment.
Regarding the reform against reelection, she announced that the Constitution of 1917 will be honored by stipulating that there will be no reelection for any popular elected position, including the presidency of the Republic. Sheinbaum expressed her motto "Effective suffrage, no reelection" along with her Cabinet, excluding members of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
As for the reform against nepotism, it aims to eliminate favoritism and family relationships as relevant criteria in the assignment of positions in the government or state institutions. The objective is for positions to be filled by the most qualified individuals and not by personal connections.
Additionally, during her speech, Sheinbaum referred to the importance of national sovereignty, particularly in the context of current tariff tensions with the United States. She recalled the essence of sovereignty according to the Constitution of 1857 and emphasized Mexico's willingness to collaborate with other nations without compromising its autonomy. She stressed that "long live sovereignty, long live the Constitution, long live a free and sovereign Mexico."
