
According to data revealed by INEGI, in the year 2024 a total of 7,056,499 establishments were in operation in Mexico, employing 36,793,604 people. Of these units, 1,430,630 used the internet for their activities, and 1,255,625 made use of digital technology tools. The most common uses were search engines and repositories, at 83.8% and 57.7% respectively.
In contrast, electronic funds transfer increased from 8.8% to 16.7%, and the use of credit or debit cards rose from 9.8% to 15.1%. On July 24, 2025, the definitive results of the Economic Censuses 2024 will be published, which will include variables such as production, net sales, raw material consumption, foreign capital participation, among others.
Regarding women’s participation in economic activities, there has been significant growth in the last 5 years. In 2018, they represented 41.3% of the occupied workforce, while in 2023 this figure increased to 43.6%. In commerce, the participation gap is smaller, with 49.1% of women and 50.9% of men.
The Economic Censuses 2024 incorporated for the first time information about employed persons with disabilities, with the least common being difficulty remembering or concentrating, affecting 10,714 people. Between 2018 and 2023, cash remained the primary means of payment for sales, although it decreased from 94.9% to 83.8%.
For the first time, the Economic Censuses 2024 included the use of digital technology in economic units. According to the INEGI report, from 2018 to 2023, the percentage of large companies, micro and small businesses that made sales via the internet increased from 3.0% to 5.5%. In the case of micro businesses, the increase was from 2.1% to 4.4%, for SMEs it rose from 18.7% to 28.8%, and in large economic units it increased from 24.0% to 32.9%.
This data, which allows understanding what, how much, how, where, and with what is produced in the Mexican economy, is very useful for decision-making in various sectors of the country. Among the difficulties reported by employed personnel, the most common was difficulty seeing, even when wearing glasses, which affected 114,721 people.
